The origin of the problem is probably in some authoring program that has converted a normal SPACE to a NO-BREAK SPACE. Hmm. However, when i tried to use the duplicate of my background image (like you had suggested) it did not work. I tried another (unrelated) image and it work perfectly.

Leave it to me to do something silly. It just vanishes and only leaves the header. If necessary you could even use different files for IE 6 and 7, because both versions have different bugs and may require different workarounds.
