After formatting with Windows' Disk Management tool I ended up with a 4K disk layout which did not work for Windows Backup. -- Using the WD Quick Formatter I could reformat Shrink or extend the partition to carry the last cluster to another location and run the “chkdsk” command again. Windows backup works if system image is not selected but as soon as I selected a full system image for backup, it fails. The tool did say "XP compatablie" or "Most Compatible- Vista and Later", did the later option and ran the format.
All it will tell me it is because of some I/O Device error. I have two 4TB Mybooks one for each server. If it shows “Bytes per sector: 512” and “Bytes per Physical Sector: 4096”, this is an advanced format (4K) disk with 512-byte emulation. All hard drives now use 4K sectors. This information is not easy to understand. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. Sad thing is, I wasn't here to see what at all changed.
