If this makes the problem go away and you are able to carry out your operation then it indicates that some third-party application may be interfering and causing the issue. Try running something like HDTune to do an error check.(chkdsk /r, and hdtune, will take a lot time. I used a MyBook 3TB for backup purpose and the windows backup software had consistent failed. They create vhd files and those require that the drive appear to have 512 byte sectors (emulation).
